Joseph Story, 1779-1845, was one of the most famous figures in United States legal history. In 1798 he graduated from Harvard and was admitted to the bar. He began his practice in Salem, Massachusetts in 1801. Elected to the state legislature in 1805, he became a leader in the Republican Party, and entered Congress in 1808. He served as a Justice of the Supreme Court from 1811 until 1845. He was also a professor of law starting in 1829 and authored numerous law books that were highly influential in the development of the law.
