This volume contains studies of the bond defaults and readjustments that occurred during the foreign debt history of eight selected countries-four of them European, three Latin American, and one North African. The studies have a common structural pattern. They review in each instance the accumulation of foreign bonded debt, the causes and nature of ensuing defaults, the negotiations for a settlement, and the terms of effectiveness of debt reorganizations. Collectively, they provide illustrations of every kind of legal, diplomatic, and economic situation that has arisen out of the relations between defaulting states and their foreign creditors.
